Emmanuelle Alt is a French stylist, consultant, and former magazine editor whose work continues to influence the visual language of contemporary fashion. Born in Paris in 1967, she began her career at French Elle before moving to 20 Ans and later Mixte magazine. Her sharp editorial eye and instinct for timeless style led her to Vogue Paris, where she became fashion director in 2000 and, in 2011, succeeded Carine Roitfeld as Editor in Chief.
Over her decade-long tenure, Alt established a signature aesthetic that celebrated strength, clarity, and understated sensuality. Her approach favored coherence over shock, creating images that balanced polish with natural ease. Her final issue, published in May 2021 to mark Vogue Paris’s centennial, reflected her focus on creative collaboration and the magazine’s lasting influence in global fashion.
Since leaving Vogue, Alt has continued to work as a stylist and consultant. She collaborates with models including Imaan Hammam, Rianne van Rompaey, and Sofia Steinberg, and contributes to publications such as Harper’s Bazaar France, Holiday, and M Le Magazine du Monde. Her longstanding relationships with photographers like David Sims, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and Inez and Vinoodh remain central to her practice.
Alt often describes her creative process as one of openness and observation, drawing inspiration from culture, art, and everyday life. Beyond her editorial and consulting work, she serves on the international jury for the LVMH Prize. Based in Paris with her partner, artistic director Franck Durand, and their two children, Alt continues to define the image of modern femininity through her distinctive, enduring vision.
