Alice Diop takes on Miu Miu’s 30th Women’s Tales with a new short film, Fragments for Venus, premiering at Venice on August 30.

Miu Miu has announced the next director in its ongoing Women’s Tales series: Alice Diop. The French filmmaker, celebrated for both her documentary work and her 2022 Venice-winning debut Saint Omer, is at the helm of the 30th installment, titled Fragments for Venus.
The short will debut on August 30 during Giornate degli Autori at the Venice Film Festival. Running just over 20 minutes, it stars Kayije Kagame and Sephora Pondi and was styled with costumes by Miu Miu. Brigitte Lacombe photographed the campaign images.
Diop is known for sharp, unflinching films that capture lives often left at the margins. Her documentaries La Permanence and Vers la tendresse established her voice, while Saint Omer cemented her as one of France’s most important contemporary directors.
For Miu Miu, Diop turns her lens toward a more intimate collage of observation and story. “Fragments for Venus is an essential film to make at this time,” she said. “It is my most simple and radical work to date.”
Launched in 2011, Women’s Tales has grown into the longest-running commissioning platform of female-led short films, pairing some of the most distinctive women directors with the brand. Over 15 years and across continents, the series has carved out a singular archive of female creativity. Diop’s chapter adds a new layer to that history.
Fragments for Venus will premiere in Venice on August 30, and will later be available to watch online through Miu Miu’s Women’s Tales platform.
