Summary

  • The Museum of Modern Art will honor Sofia Coppola at its 17th annual Film Benefit on November 12.
  • The tribute includes screenings of all nine of her feature films plus her early short, Lick the Star.
  • Chanel continues its long partnership with MoMA as presenting sponsor of the Film Benefit.

The Museum of Modern Art’s 17th annual Film Benefit will turn its focus to Sofia Coppola this fall. On November 12, MoMA and Chanel will celebrate the writer and director whose films have defined a cinematic mood since the late 1990s.

Coppola’s work is deeply tied to MoMA’s own history. Five of her features are part of the museum’s collection, including The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, and Marie Antoinette. Her relationship with the institution stretches back over two decades, beginning with a dedicated program in 2004. Since then, her projects have returned to MoMA through exhibitions and series, most recently with Priscilla in 2023.

To accompany the benefit, MoMA will mount Sofia Coppola: A Tribute, running from October 30 to November 16. The series spans her full filmography from her early short Lick the Star through her latest feature.

Chanel, a longtime supporter of film at MoMA, will once again present the evening. The house has backed the annual benefit since 2011 and became lead sponsor of the film program in 2021. Its support extends to restoration work and the preservation of cinema history worldwide.

The benefit helps sustain MoMA’s vast film collection, which houses more than 30,000 titles. Previous honorees have included Penélope Cruz, George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and Quentin Tarantino. This year, the spotlight will belong to Coppola.

Tickets for MoMA’s Film Benefit and the accompanying tribute series will be available through the museum.
