Gustaf Westman debuts a meatball plate for IKEA, teasing a 12-piece collection set to launch on September 9.

The first release from IKEA and Gustaf Westman is a porcelain plate designed for Sweden’s most famous cafeteria order. A glossy, rounded rectangle runs a neat channel that lines up exactly eleven meatballs. It reads like a playful nod to tradition and to IKEA’s own food world.

The blue feels close to IKEA’s signature, filtered through Westman’s candy bright palette. The silhouette is simple, graphic and unmistakably his.
Westman has long favored single purpose objects that make their use self evident. Think holiday tables at home and the way meatballs are served in Sweden. IKEA notes the plant, veggie, chicken and salmon versions slot in just as neatly.
There is even a small leaflet with diagrams, the kind you expect with a flat pack shelf rather than gravy and lingonberry. The mood is light, but the intent is practical.
The teaser lands in the same week as Swedish Meatball Day, with the full twelve piece collection of tableware and home objects will be revealed on September 9th.
