The Hasselblad X2D II 100C arrives as a new flagship, a medium-format camera that centers on image fidelity and practical control. It pairs a 100MP sensor with HDR image processing in a compact body, and it debuts alongside a standard zoom, the XCD 2.8–4/35–100E.
Hasselblad’s roots run back to 1841, when Fritz Wiktor Hasselblad founded a trading company in Gothenburg that later moved into photography at his son’s urging. The brand established an early partnership with Eastman Kodak, supplied cameras for military use during the Second World War, and began producing civilian models from 1941. That lineage frames the X2D II 100C as an update to the X2D 100C, now tuned for natural color across varied lighting.
The headline is the 100-megapixel sensor with 16-bit color depth. Hasselblad quotes the ability to reproduce 281 trillion colors, which speaks to subtle tonal shifts and precise gradients. HDR image processing is aimed at keeping those tones intact, so the file holds together whether the light is flat or high contrast.
Stability gets a marked boost. The new sensor is paired with a stabilization system that Hasselblad says is more than eight times more efficient than before, allowing long exposures without a tripod. The body is also lighter than the earlier model, a small but useful change for shoots that stretch across the day.
Control and storage lean into a field-first mindset. There is 1TB of internal SSD storage, a 3.6-inch OLED touchscreen, an electronic viewfinder, and a full set of physical controls. Phocus Mobile 2, a new iOS app, acts as a remote with live view and doubles as an editing space, which tightens the loop between capture and delivery on set.
The lens launch matters. The XCD 2.8–4/35–100E covers a 28–76mm zoom range, positioned for portraits, street frames, and landscapes. An ultra-fast autofocus system works alongside the X2D II’s control algorithms, so focus and handling keep pace with the camera’s resolution. The lens measures 138mm and weighs 894g, which gives a clear sense of its footprint in a bag or on a rig.
