Maison Margiela’s latest project under creative director Glenn Martens brings the Tabi boot into collector territory. The brand has launched the Tabi Collector’s Series, beginning with the Broken Mirror Embroidery edition, a hand-worked piece produced in just 25 pairs worldwide.
Each boot is embroidered with more than 8,000 glass beads, sequins, and metallic fragments that catch the light like cracked glass. The process revisits a signature Maison Margiela technique first seen in the fall 2015 Artisanal collection under John Galliano, when the “broken mirror” motif appeared on outerwear and evening pieces. Here, it takes three-dimensional form on the Tabi’s split toe, built by 11 artisans whose work borders on sculpture.
For Martens, the Tabi remains the brand’s purest expression: conceptual, practical, and instantly recognizable. The designer continues to find new ways to explore its cultural afterlife while keeping the craftsmanship front and center.
To mark the release, the house collaborated with Italian filmmaker Yuri Ancarani on a short film documenting the making of the Broken Mirror Tabi from initial sketch to finished form.
The Tabi Collector Broken Mirror Embroidery will be showcased in select Maison Margiela stores beginning October 30, 2025.
